Hair Loss Myths
Hair loss is inherited from the mother's side of the family
While the most common cause of hair loss is genetic, known as androgenetic alopecia, it is not limited to the maternal side of the family. The hair loss gene can come from either side and one can also be inclined towards hair loss problems due to genes inherited from either side of the family or even both. The genetic cause of hair loss has nothing to do with what side of the family you are a part of, it is simply the luck of the draw.
Hair loss can be caused by wearing hats
In order for the hair to fall out, the hat would have to be so tight that it cuts circulation to the follicles. So logically speaking; no, wearing hats does not cause hair loss. Since many who suffer from hair loss problems wear a hat to hide their embarrassment, this could be where the myth originated from.
Brushing your hair is better than combing it
Your hair does react better to a comb than a brush. But brushing excessively will only cause hair breakage and split ends, not hair loss. In fact, using a either a comb or a brush is not going to result in hair loss and make you go bald.
Using hair products excessively can cause hair loss
There is no truth in this since there are no hair care products that are known to cause hair loss. You may style your hair with as much hair gel or spray as you like.
Using a blow dryer causes hair loss
There is no proof at all to support that the use of hair dryers will cause hair loss. But excessive blow drying will damage your hair by burning or over drying it, eventually causing it to fall off. This is reversible and your hair will grow back, hence it is not a proper hair loss problem.
Vigorous towel drying can cause hair loss
If the condition of your hair is already in bad shape, then vigorous towel drying may aggravate it enough to break and fall off. This is by no means an actual form of hair loss problem as it does not cause irreparable damage to your hair. Like blow drying, vigorous towel drying is not a proper cause of hair loss.
Excessive washing of hair causes hair loss
Washing your hair often is certainly not a cause of hair loss. This myth may have arisen due to the fact that after washing our hair it is common to notice some hair loss. This is perfectly natural and does not indicate any relation between hair washing and permanent hair loss.
Hair loss can be cured by standing on your head
The concept is that, by standing on your head more blood will flow to your hair follicles thus stimulating new hair growth. While that may sound like a good idea, there's no evidence whatsoever to prove it. Follicles need more than just blood flow to grow hair.
